Michael Fakesch and Chris De Luca form Munich based outfit Funkstörung (pronounced “foonk-shteuroong”) Their 2015 self titled comeback album (after 10 years of silence) drew my attention purely for the label it was released under. Monkeytown Records is a small electronic music label founded by Sebastian Szary and Gernot Bronsert of Modeselektor, another favourite of mine, so I wanted to give them a go!

Funkstörung – Funkstörung

This German production duo have quite a distinct and recognisable sound, first found on a remixes release of theirs in 1999, then on their full length debut in 2000. Each song giving you a slice of electronic noise, digital soul, and cinematic ambience. Also having contributed remixes for artists like Björk and Wu-Tang Clan, Funkstörung seem to like to defy musical boundaries by crossing and blending genres to create something entirely their own. IDM and electronica at it’s core there can be some heavy glitchy beats, at times a soft ambient feel but always paired with some great soul guest vocals from the likes of Jamie Lidell and Audego.

Funkstörung is out now, check snippets of each album track on their soundcloud page

Speaking of Monkeytown Records……I can’t wait for the new Moderat LP (Modeselektor + Apparat) – out April 1st 2016
