Another recommendation from a friend, track names and YouTube links were repeatedly sent to me until I finally gave them a go! Awesome sounds from local Cambridge band Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats. A real retro rock sound aided by using vintage equipment to play and record with. This band really do sound like they’re playing from the late 60s. With songs about witches covens, guitar riffs straight from the Black Sabbath playbook and influences from Neil Young’s songwriting shining through the tunes, with enough room to still make their songs distinct and their own.
Uncle Acid – The Night Creeper
Now onto their 4th Album ‘The Night Creeper’ (2nd whilst signed to Rise Above Records) and now seen as just ‘Uncle Acid’ There has been no real change to the sound of the band. Using old fuzz pedals and broken amps to create a lo-fi saturated sound, the band give a full on mixture of psychedelic rock’s harrowing comedown, garage and punk rock’s nihilistic ascent, and the earliest manifestations of heavy metal’s occult-laced, nerve-damaging bludgeon…..heavy!
In a similar vein to Sabbath being inspired to write music around old horror movies from the cinema opposite rehearsals, Uncle Acid have stories running through their albums such as “a drug crazed sadist who embarks on a witch-finding killing spree before meeting his own demise at the withered hands of Satan” or “a cult leader who comes down from the mountain and brainwashes his desert disciples through drugs, love, violence, and intimidation” but there is also undertones of heavy influence Neil Young throughout their songs.
Having toured with Black Sabbath and touring the US with their own show, original 70s metal is still alive! Offical news from the acid coven!
