I found Maribou State through a newsletter from Ninja Tune….they’re not signed to Ninja but seem to be selling their latest album Portraits through their online Ninjashop and I’m a big fan of most of the artists on there so I thought I’d give ’em a go! The album itself isn’t quite groundbreaking material but it runs along the lines of other (almost) label mates on Ninja. It’s got that nice smooth jazz-tinged trip-hop feel to it but bringing it to the present adding an ambient dubstep element.

Maribou State – Portraits

Hertfordshire duo began their electronic experiments back in 2011 and released their first EP ‘Olivia’ on Fat! Records. They started gaining more recognition with a bootleg cover of Lauryn Hill’s ‘Doo wop’, racking up plenty of YouTube hits and airtime on Radio 1, 1Xtra and XFM courtesy of Diplo, B. Traits and Eddy Temple Morris. A few more remixes/singles/EP and album later, getting more airtime from the likes of Annie Mac, Lauren Laverne and Pete Tong giving them Essential Tune status, they release their second LP ‘Portraits’ on Counter.

The whole album has a similar feel as Bonobo, Portico or Cinematic Orchestra, not quite up to scratch with these established artists but brim full with some soft chilled and very well crafted atmospheric songs. Guest vocals coming from Jono McCleery (previously mentioned for guest vocals on the last Portico LP) Holly Walker and Pedestrian.

Maribou State – Portraits is available at iTunes, at the Ninjashop or through their own Bandcamp page
